Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education- International Affairs Service (CHED-IAS) hosted the Master Teachers Training 2022: Course for Global English Competitiveness Development- Mindanao Leg held at the Dr. Juanito A. Bruno Gymnasium on November 16-18, 2022.
The three-day intensive master teacher training is focused on the communicative teaching with complete training and orientation course for teachers and school administrators. This aims to further raise the level of awareness and adoption of Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) to international standards and teaching techniques.
The activity is anchored on the 3-year National Roadmap for Global Competitiveness in Communication Skills (NRGCCS) Project. The project is envisioned to be the country’s response to various challenges and opportunities concerning the country’s level of English language proficiency. It aims to further develop our competitive advantage in this area to contribute to our progress towards a globally competitive knowledge economy. Its main goal is adopting the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages as a recognized metric for communicative competitiveness.
Ms. Angela N. Concepcion, Training and Development Manager- Hopkins International Partners, gave an orientation on the CEFR. CEFR is an international standard for describing language ability. It describes language ability on a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered a language.
Dr. Marjorie Gutierrez-Tangog, Vice President for Academic and Research- Southville International Schools and Colleges, facilitated the discussion on communicative language teaching (CLT) and designing CLT activities.
Mr. Rex Wallen Tan, Director Government-Academe-Industry Network, Inc (GAIN), discussed the EAQUALS Core Inventory and CFR in the institutional direction and its curriculum alignment. He also facilitated the workshop on assessing institutional practices relevant to the English language teaching and learning.
Dr. Mary G. Alvior Dean, College of Teacher Education- Palawan State University, talked about the scope and sequence of English textbooks in the Philippines and abroad which was followed by a workshop. Dr. Alvior also discussed how to create and design a CFR level – aligned curriculum and instruction. Lastly, Prof. Eddie M. Nuque, Professor and Senior Fellow- SDG Lab, De La Salle University, gave a briefer on the NGRCCS Framework and the national goals it was anchored from.
This training was participated to by delegates from different SUCs from all over Mindanao.
